Slowdown Sunday: Kemetic Yoga Style

  • Daybreak Yoga 794 Broadway Avenue Bedford, OH, 44146 United States (map)

Daybreak Yoga is celebrating Black History Month with a special edition of Slowdown Sunday: Kemetic Yoga Style taught by special guest teacher, Vonita Burke! This event is sponsored in part by Bumble and Black Girl in the CLE!!

We want to celebrate the history of Africans in America through the ancient practice of Kemetic Yoga. What is Kemetic Yoga? Kemet is one of many names for ancient Egypt.  “Kemet” translates to black land.  Kemetic Yoga was developed by Dr. Asar Hapi and Master Teacher Yirser Ra Hotep in Chicago in the 1970’s.  Dr. Hapi has a background in sports medicine and Ra Hotep has a background in sociology.

Dr. Hapi, and Ra Hotep, who were practicing yoga in the 70’s, began studying, translating, and interpreting the hieroglyphic texts and images on the walls of the temples and determined that these were yoga postures and described a yogic lifestyle.  Through further research, they also determined that these images and writings were far older than those writings of yoga in India.

What emerged from the minds of Dr. Hapi and Ra Hotep was a system of yoga based on the practices of physical movement, controlled breathing, and meditation.  Kemetic yoga is further characterized by geometric angles and shapes that look like the pyramid.  Kemetic Yoga is slower, focuses on relaxation, and based on the principles of Ma’at (balance and harmony).
